This band is focused on popular music played in Iranian, pre-revolution of 79. When people think of Iranian music, what comes to mind is traditional instruments, playing classical Iranian material.
“We strive to keep alive what is called Iranian Art music, which takes a lot of influence from Jazz and Latin music. Songs of artists such as Ramesh, Viguen, Giti and Kourosh Yaghmaei will be expected. We hope you enjoy.”
With Jo “Zhwan” Zolikhapour on Piano, Max Huberdeau on Drums, and David Caballero on Bass

Juno award-winning guitarist/oud player’s acclaimed quartet combines mainstream jazz, free improv and Arabic music for an exciting, unique sound.
The oud, an ancient lute-type instrument, is typically heard in music of the Middle East, Africa and Asia. In Western jazz, not so much. “Vancouver musician Gordon Grdina is doing a lot to change that,” states the Vancouver Sun.
Having studied the instrument and its extensive repertoire, Grdina’s oud playing drives his numerous projects, both large and small. The latter includes his quartet The Marrow. Combining Middle Eastern traditions with avant-garde jazz, the music is dense with rhythmic counterpoints and mesmerizing ebb and flow dynamics between the players. The band “makes some of the most grooving and soothing music around. You could play this for anyone and have them nodding along,” says the Vancouver Sun.
The Marrow features New York aces Mark Helias on bass and Hank Roberts on cello, along with Montreal-based Persian percussionist Hamin Honari. The group has released two albums, Safar-e-Daroon (2020) and Ejdeha (2018). All About Jazz called Ejdeha, “a compelling work of contemporary and ancient telepathy.”
Prolific, virtuosic, and “constantly reinventing himself and surprising listeners with an ever-changing array of new sounds and concepts” (Alex Varty, Georgia Straight), Grdina has graced the BlueShore stage many times and each experience is a remarkable musical journey.
